East Village Blues
LOWER EAST SIDE
The East Village represents many things to many people. This multiethnic
community was the home of many immigrants when they first arrived in this
country. Attracted by low rents, many artists, art galleries and other small
businesses moved into the area in the late 1970's. As the neighborhood generated
more income, rents increased, and families and small businesses were threatened
by co-op and condominium conversions. The past police violence in Tompkins
Square Park can be seen as part of the growing economic prejudice of this
area. Consequently, these changes are threatening the multicultural stability.
"Lower East Side" is a five minute musical documentary look into
the feelings and thoughts that the residents hold for their neighborhood.
These perceptions are coupled with images of homelessness and other effects
of gentrification that are plaguing the community. The tape also explores
the relationships between home, family and community and looks into the
heart of a neighborhood that has contributed to uniqueness of New York City.
"Lower East Side" has been a distinguished finalist by "CityVideos:
A Celebration of America", a national competition presented by the
Arts & Entertainment Channel.
